Born in Rotorua and raised in
Whakatane, Gary Freemantle graduated with a BFA in Painting from
the University of Canterbury's Ilam School of Fine Arts in 1984,
before embarking on travels that have influenced both his
world-view and his painterly style.
He has been awarded
artist-in-residences at both Wanganui's Tylee House (1994) and
Wellington's Rita Angus House (1989 and 1995).
Responsible for establishing the One Eye Gallery in
Paekakariki, Freemantle is also an experienced tutor working
in tertiary and community education. He has held numerous solo
shows, including sculptural and video installation works at the
Auckland City Gallery and Racetrack, a 35 metre long
painting installation at Wellington's City Art Gallery.
