Hayley King's recent work explores a perceived prejudice against
the traditions of decorative art - that decorative work or forms
designed with repetition or function in mind are somehow
illegitimate. By disconnecting ornamental forms from their
repetitive or purely decorative nature and allowing these forms to
function as singular emblems, King creates works that emphasise and
actively exaggerate the pervasive effect that everyday patterns and
motifs have on popular culture.
Born in 1979, King attended Auckland's Unitec, graduating in
2003 with a Bachelor of Design majoring in Painting.
King is the driving force behind Flox Design, under whose
moniker she is also responsible for a number of public graffiti
installations alongside artists like Trustme and Component in the
Cut Collective.
