Rodney Fumpston was born in Fiji in 1947. After settling in New
Zealand he attended Elam School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1972
with a Masters in Fine Arts (First Class Honours). After travelling
to London and graduating from the Advanced Studies in Printmaking
course at the Central School of Art and Design in 1974, Fumpston
returned to Auckland and taught at the Auckland Society of Arts. He
was largely responsible for establishing the print studio, which
built up a considerable reputation for producing quality work at
the Society.
As a result, he was made head of the Printmaking Department
in 1988.
Over the years Fumpston has exhibited in many solo shows and has
participated in numerous group shows. His prints and paintings are
held in a number of public and private collections. His studio
dominates his home in Auckland where he continues to produce prints
of exceptional quality. He remains a tutor, and has always
travelled to develop his artistic ideas.
