A multi-disciplinary artist, South African-born Alex Stone holdsa Master of Arts in Art & Design from AUT, and is widely known as a painter, sculptor, performance poet and writer of some repute.
Artistically, Stone's passion is abstracted line - calligraphic, fluid and rhythmic.
Drawing inspiration from the cave drawings ofhis childhood home in South Africa, he paints in muted, earthytones: rich ambers, tans and blacks counter pointed with red andslashes of white. While Stone's works may resemble a dance or amusical score, a response or description of an event in line and motion that invites a literal meaning, they nonetheless hold the quality of cunningly eluding concrete description, instead impressing on the viewer an emotive lyricism.
In 2003, Stone was shortlisted for the BNZ Katharine Mansfield Awards. Stone has exhibited in numerous solo & group shows throughout New Zealand and his large scale sculptural workCrouch, Touch, Pause, Engage... was a mainstay of the 2011Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens exhibition. He continues to write & produce work from his base in Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf.
