Angus de Lange
Born and educated in New Zealand, Angus de Lange trained in the late 1960's as an industrial designer. He travelled to Europe, where he worked as a designer in Finland, before returning home toteach at the Auckland and Carrington Institutes of Technology. In 1988, de Lange devoted himself to painting as a full-time occupation. Mainly self taught, de Lange continues to develop his interests in Europe where he travels regularly, and the United States, where his work is represented in private collections.
Although based in New Zealand, de Lange's work is often influenced by travel experiences in other countries. His gouache works on paper utilise a distinctive type of paint only available in France and de Lange has built on this unique aspect of his work, creating iridescent hues and electric tones from seemingly simplistic materials.
Expressionist in their essence, de Lange's child-like marks appear to contradict the notion of the nurturing of artistic skill by making light of the repetitively learnt concepts of composition, draughtsmanship and colour theory. In de Lange's terms, these works' are concerned with the apprehension of resemblances of the naturalworld and its objects in painterly terms.'
De Lange's works are held in private collections in New Zealand, the USA and the United Kingdom. He continues to produce work and exhibits regularly.
